Ivana Lazar-Colic

Ivana Lazar-Colic, a native of Varazdin, Croatia, has been singing with The Cecilia Chorus of New York at Carnegie Hall for a number of years. She will be performing with The Chorus in its upcoming biannual concert which will feature Zaid Jabri's "A Garden Among the Flames" and Brahms' Requiem

About the Concert

Completing the cycle of new works commissioned by The Chorus for its 2016-17 season, the Syrian composer Zaid Jabri’s “A Garden Among the Flames” will have its World Premiere in Carnegie Hall on May 6. It is based on Sufi text by Ibn-Arabi with additional text by Yvette Christiansë. It will share the program with Brahms' Requiem.

Chelsea Shepard, one of the soloists, wrote the following about The Chorus’ upcoming concert: "How admirable of The Cecilia Chorus of New York and Maestro Shapiro to commission that piece by the Syrian composer Zaid Jabri, calling out for peace and tolerance while describing the trauma of the refugees fleeing the horrors in the region. None of us can get the images of the young boy covered in blood, or the child washed up on the shore, or the most recent photos of the horrifying chemical attacks out of our minds, but we can’t take on the pain of the whole world all the time. Music is a safe place to experience this. It gives us permission to grieve in a way we can’t experience in our everyday lives. And, after hearing A Garden Among the Flames, who can listen to the Brahms Requiem without hearing it as a requiem for Syria?”

More about Ivana

Music has been a strong influence in Ivana's life from an early age - from the first classical music concerts she attended as a toddler in her beautiful hometown of Varazdin, through music education in elementary school and participation in various choirs. Her formal education earned her a Master’s Degree in Journalism, and she worked as a radio host and producer for seven years in Zagreb. After moving to New York in 2010, she continued to nurture her passion for singing by auditioning for and joining The Cecilia Chorus of New York. She is proud of the fact that she has performed in Carnegie Hall a few times already, where her chorus holds its biannual concert series. She is a registered "Music Together®" teacher and currently works as an early childhood educator in New York City.
